On Tuesday, I got the opportunity to attend the SkinCeuticals and the Rao Dermatology Alberta Durmasurgery Centre launch event here in Edmonton!

The event was celebrating the first SkinCeuticals flagship location here, and their recent partnership with the board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Rao! A handful of local bloggers were invited to learn about Skinceuticals, the company, tour the facility, and get a full skincare analysis! I was truly honoured to be invited, it was an absolute pleasure to attend. The food catering was incredible and unique (they had candied bacon. Candied bacon!!!) The atmosphere was clean, open, educational, and fun.

Dr. Rao and his team opened up a brand new clinic here in Edmonton (which is stunning!) The clinic is a full Dermasurgery clinic, that offers medical and cosmetic dermatology and surgery. The clinic is massive, with operating rooms, consultation rooms, recovery rooms, offices, facial peel rooms, and more. What I thought was truly amazing is that they have the ability to screen, operate on, and test skin cancer right in their clinic!

About Dr. Rao:  Dr. Jaggi Rao is an award-winning dermatologist, skin & cosmetic surgeon, author, and educator. He’s also certified in both Canada and the United States! He’s the dermatologist for the Edmonton Eskimos and Oilers (which is pretty darn cool!) He also teaches at the University of Alberta, and created the Acne Clinics of Canada! He’s such an inspiration, and it was an honour to meet him and hear about his new clinic, and why he truly believes in SkinCeuticals.

Skinceuticals: this incredible and innovative brand was founded by Dr. Sheldon Pinnell in 1994. The brand is hugely based on science and research, and has paved the way for some major breakthroughs in skincare, particularly the importance of antioxidants and sun protection. It’s described as a “cosmeceutical” brand, combining cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This is a dermatologist grade company, with significant scientific research and testing backing up all formulations on products. Many of the products are used in the clinic after all sorts of cosmetic and skin procedures. I am planning to do a full review of the brand, and many of the skincare products in the next month, so stay tuned for that if you are interested!

It was so much fun, so educational, and very inspiring. We learned all about antioxidants, sun-protection, skin-aging, and more. Each attendee received a full skin analysis, where we placed our heads in a machine that shows you multiple layers of your skin. This machine detects multiple skin conditions such as dehydration, clogged pores, and most importantly sun damage or discoloration. It was a little terrifying – if you ever think you have nice skin, that machine will likely prove otherwise. But for the purpose of detecting deep sun damage or early discoloration, etc, it’s very beneficial. As expected, the machine showed my dehydrated, combination skin, dry patches, and some pigmentation issues. They mapped out a whole skin routine for us, and gave us an arsenal of skincare recommendations, tips and tricks.

If you live in the Edmonton area and are needing any sort of cosmetic or dermatological procedure, or want to learn about SkinCeuticals, definitely check out the Alberta Durmasurgery Centre!

Did you know that up to approximately 90% of visible skin aging is preventable, and often caused by sun damage? Ghergich & Co. (involved in SEO, social networking, and content marketing) recently collaborated with Health Perch (a digital health magazine) in an awesome post about skin aging. They created some incredibly cute and creative graphics, and were kind enough to let me use them for my own post! (No, this post is not sponsored!)

Skincare has been a huge passion and obsession of mine since I first started working in cosmetics. I started in the industry working at Clinique, which as I’m sure many of you know has quite a strong presence in the skincare world. It inspired a fascination with all things skin care, as well as the science behind products, and the biology of skin aging.  View Full Post

I have barely ever purchased skin care from Sephora, because I usually only buy from Shoppers Drug Mart, as I’m more familiar with their brands and have trained with many of them. But my best friend Claudia told me about this Invigorating Night serum from Ole Henriksen and when we went shopping together I was instantly intrigued. I’m attracted to anything that promises to smooth, brighten and even out my skin.

I was given a sample to try and fell in love with it after the second use!

What it is: The Invigorating Night Treatment is a skin resurfacer/re-texturizing gel. It’s designed to accelerate cell turnover, to help with texture, fine lines, bumps, acne-prone skin, and more. The texture is a lightweight gel dries rather quickly on the skin.

Even though it does contain moisturizing ingredients, it can be drying for normal – dry skin types. If you use it on its own, you may not be happy with it. It’s advised to follow this with a moisturizer!

It retails for about $56 is pricey, but I believe is worth every penny.

How it works: Its balance of incredible ingredients helps to renew skin cells, diminish lines and wrinkles, minimized pores, evens skin tone, helps with scarring and discolouration. Using at night, this aids and encourages the skin’s peak time for skin repair.

Ingredients:  AHA complex (alpha hydroxy acids – chemical compounds commonly used in the cosmetic industry for anti-aging/skin renewing products!) AHAs often come from food sources, and in this case can be found in the “12 source AHA complex” with skin-boosting ingredients like lactic acid, sugar cane extract, orange and lemon extract, and more.

It also has algae extract to nourish the skin, and mucopolysaccharides (such as the very popular hyaluronic acid!) to help moisturize by binding moisture to the skin.

Fragrance is listed as an ingredient, but as the last ingredient in a very small quantity. I am usually always allergic to scented products, but this particular one hasn’t bothered me at all!

My thoughts: This is one of those miracle products that transform your skin and skincare routine. It’s one of those products that makes you believe in the power of skincare and science again. I was very sceptical and was worried about experiencing a reaction to it. But even with my ultra sensitive, eczema and allergy-prone skin, this product has not aggravated my skin at all as long. I only use it at a few times a week at night and follow with moisturizer. If you have hyper-allergic skin or rosacea, I would be careful with any sort of AHA product.

My skin hasn’t been this smooth since before I struggled with acne, about 6 years ago. When I wake up in the morning after using this, my skin is smooth, clear, and more even. It’s helped reduce my acne scarring and pigmentation, and has even helped clear up blemishes and acne!

I apply this product after my hydrating serum, and before my moisturizer. My skin does feel a bit tight after this product, but finishing with a moisturizer solves this problem right away!

Bottomline: if you struggle with texture or blemishes/mild acne, or are concerned with the early signs of ageing, the Invigorating Night Serum is a must-try!

This look is quick, easy, and great for days when you’re in a rush, tired, or just don’t feel like doing anything too complicated. The eyes are soft but bright, helping you to look more awake. You can definitely add lashes for more drama, but on lazy/rushed days I personally can’t be bothered with falsies!
For the skin, the products that I used are more ideal for drier skin types. I personally have very dehydrated, acne-prone, skin and suffer from eczema. Getting a smoother, brighter, and more healthy looking complexion can be difficult to achieve. This look is about creating a brighter, more glowing, more hydrated looking complexion.

I hope you enjoy, and thank you for watching!
