Firstly, I’m so incredibly excited to be able to start blogging again, and I’m jumping back into it with a product review! While I wish my first review back was a more positive one, I still wanted to share my thoughts on the *MILK Makeup Melatonin Overnight Lip Mask. The mask has been a very popular product lately – so when I tried it, I knew I wanted to share my thoughts.

Here’s a quick rundown of the *MILK Makeup Melatonin Overnight Lip Mask:
Price: $29 CAD (approximately $22 USD)
Size: 0.28 oz (8g)
What it claims: A hydrating overnight lip treatment with melatonin, Persian silk tree extract, hyaluronic acid, goji berry, acai berry, and more. It claims to hydrate, soften, refreshen and “increase lips’ visible melatonin levels” according to MILK Makeup and Sephora.
Pretty big claims, I know. As someone forever looking for that perfect lip treatment to help my seemingly chronically dehydrated lips. I also have a serious love for all things lavender, and as this product is vegan (and MILK Makeup is cruelty-free) this was on my radar for months.
I was definitely put off by the price, but it seems to have a lot of positive reviews on Sephora (4.3/5 stars from over 180 reviews) so I was super excited to try it.
Shoutout to my friend Nicole for encouraging me to try this so I can get back into reviewing products!
First impression: it’s a thick, buttery texture that initially feels really soft on the lips. It definitely has a great texture when first applied, and a little goes a long way. I can definitely see this product lasting a long time, which makes the price tag a little more justified (over $20 for any lip balm is overpriced in my opinion though. Unless it’s made from the nectar of the Gods.) It has a really lovely (though strong) lavender scent – so if you’re not a lavender fan, you’ll probably want to skip this one.
My first impression of the MILK Makeup Melatonin Overnight Lip Mask* was a really positive one. I expected this to become my new favourite – but sadly, became pretty disappointed.
After the first night (applying it before bed) I woke up with my lips feeling like I hadn’t put anything on. They didn’t feel hydrated but rather felt the same as when I don’t put anything on. The next day, I decided to wear it throughout the day. Again, at first, it felt great- super soft and hydrated. However, it seemed to disappear really quickly and made me feel like I needed to reapply after about an hour.
I kept trying it over the next few days (honestly, I think I just really wanted to like it.) Sadly, it felt like my lips just weren’t being hydrated. I felt like I had to keep reapplying constantly because it seemed to just absorb without really hydrating. I wasn’t expecting the scent to be as strong as it is and can’t help but wonder if the fragrance is what’s causing it to be drying (fragrance is one of the most drying ingredients, and the negative reviews seem to have the same problem.) Despite the great ingredients like shea butter, berry extracts, hyaluronic acid etc, this lip mask just really didn’t seem to hydrate my lips.
Final Verdict: Overall, I can see the appeal of a product like this, but I personally didn’t feel like it and really don’t think it’s worth the price.

It’s not a horrible product but seems to be quite gimmicky and overpriced while falling very short of its claims. I rarely do this, but I’m actually planning to return it.
Now, of course, everyone is different and products work differently for everyone. Just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. Luckily Sephora does have a good return policy, so if you’re wanting to splurge and treat yourself, I can see this as being a splurge, self-care sort of product.
