Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipsticks Review

Too Faced recently launched a large range of liquid lipsticks. There’s no shortage of matte liquid lipsticks on the market, but I think there’s always room for more (after all, not all liquid lipsticks are great!)

Too Faced is quickly becoming one of my favourite brands, so I knew I absolutely had to try these new liquid lipsticks. I purchased them just after they launched on Sephora Canada online, and only purchased 3 of the shades (all the rest of the shades have been sold out since launching!)

I picked up 3 shades: (left to right) “Feelin’ Myself,” “Cool Girl,” and “Queen B”

Launch date: April 2016

Price: $21 USD, $25 Canadian

Shade Range: 17 shades (16 regular shades, with 1 exclusive shade for VIB Rouge members – as of April 2016 – called “On Point”)

These are a liquid lipstick formula with a matte finish. The texture is similar to the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid lipstick formula, but a bit thicker in consistency. They’re opaque and definitely matte, and the shade range is gorgeous.

The packaging is funky and unique, and a nice change from the typical cylindrical tube. I love the wider bottom (although it does make them harder to fit into lipstick holders) and the gold embossed font.

One swipe gives a mostly-opaque finish, but I do find they can be a little patchy and may require 2 coats.

As for the texture, I do find they apply very nicely to the lips, but are a bit on the drying side. You will definitely want to make sure your lips are well prepped before hand (lips exfoliated and hydrated) otherwise they can settle slightly into lines or accentuate dryness.

(Swatches done on bare lips, without lipliner or lip primer – my camera settings were a little off, so I apologize for the weird colouring in the first photo!)

“Cool Girl” turns quite brown on me, I was expecting it to be slightly more pink and paler. “Queen B” is definitely one of my favourite shades, it’s a gorgeous purple-toned mauvey pink. “Feelin Myself” looks quite orange on camera, but in person it’s more of a pink-toned coral.

They lasted for about 4 hours on my lips, and then started to feel a bit drying. I didn’t find they flaked or peeled noticeably on my lips, which is always a big turn-off for me in many liquid lipstick formulas.

As with any lip product, I always prefer to line my lips with lipliner first. This really helps prolong the wear, prevent patchiness, and make your lips look much more even and cleaner. I didn’t use lipliner in my swatches so you could see just the colour of the Melted Mattes themselves, however I will definitely wear these with a lipliner.

Overall, I think they are a great formula despite being a bit drying. They packaging is great, the doe-foot applicator applies just the right amount of product, the color payoff is fantastic, and they last a relatively long time o the lips.

One of the main complaints I saw for these has to do with the smell. Some people find they have a really bad smell. Personally, I don’t smell any scent whatsoever. It doesn’t seem that Too Faced has put any strong synthetic scent to mask the smell of the ingredients. They aren’t the best smelling of lipsticks on the market, but I don’t personally find they smell bad at all.

I will be picking up more shades, like “Sellout” and “Child Star.”

Have you tried these? What are your thoughts on them?
