Smashbox has a ton of exciting new and upcoming products! I got the chance to attend Smashbox training, to learn about all of the new products and play around with them.
1) First up, the Double Exposure palette: (full review coming soon!)
This gorgeous palette is the sequel to the original Full Exposure palette. Inspired by the photography technique called “multiple exposure” this palette is versatile, transformative, and unique. It has 14 shadows with coated pigments, meaning they can be used wet or dry. Each shadow changes slightly when wet, so you’re technically getting 28 shades! This palette launched end of December-early January. I am seriously loving with this palette. The colours are pigmented, blendable, and so incredibly gorgeous.
2) Smashbox Photofilter Powder Foundation:
Described as an “instagram filter” for your face, this incredible powder foundation is unlike any I have tried so far. It’s without a doubt the smoothest, most blendable powder I’ve ever used. The coverage is buildable, with a duo-textured sponge for sheer or full coverage. Using Light Filter Technology and polymers, this powder reflects light in such a way that it almost appears as though the skin is blurred – I know, things like that typically sound gimmicky. But let me tell you, this powder is basically a gift from the heavens.
It’s long-wearing, heat and water resistant, and best of all – it doesn’t cake, flake, or settle into dry skin like so many others do! I’m dry-skinned, so for girls like me, powder tends to be a big no-no. This powder, however, doesn’t accentuate my dryness.
I do prefer a dewier finish, so I use this powder to set areas where I need the extra coverage. You can use it on its own (ideal for oilier skins), or to set for normal to drier skins.
It instantly became my new favourite powder!
3) Photofinish Primer Water:
This is probably one of the most exciting Smashbox launches for the season. It’s a brand new – and quite revolutionary, I must say – form of the original primer. Smashbox describes it as “everything you love about [our] original primer in our lightest, purest, most refreshing form,”
Infused with an electrolyte complex, it replenishes moisture, hydrates, and energizes skin for a radiant, vibrant feel. It’s silicone free, alcohol-free, and multi-purpose.
It can be sprayed onto the skin after moisturizer to prime (ideal for super oily skins, or those who hate to add a thicker primer onto the face.) It can be used to refresh makeup without the day, or to set makeup.
It can also be kept in the fridge for an even cooler and more refreshing feel!
4) Step by Step Contouring Trio:
These adorable pencils make highlighting and contouring significantly easier. The 3 neutral-toned shades mimic ideal lighting and shadows. The textures are creamy and blendable, with a dark shade for contouring, a transition bronze shade, and a light shade for highlighting. A set like this is really great for people just starting to play around with contouring!
(I apologize that some of these are missing pictures – while I did get a chance to try them in training, I wasn’t able to find pictures for some online as they haven’t yet been released)
1) Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liner:
Okay, let’s discuss the elephant in the room. Yes, these look and are quite similar to the Benefit They’re Real! Push Up liner. Both are a gel liner formula in a pen-style applicator with an angled tip.
At first I was a little skeptical, but after trying these for the first time, I can confidently say that these are a – (sorry, Benefit, I do love you, but the Push Up Liner was a bit of a dud in my opinion) – better, improved, and easier to use version of the gel-eyeliner pen concept.
They’re incredibly long wearing, high-intensity, waterproof, and smudge-proof. They come in 8 gorgeous shades, including a lovely pastel-toned purple.
The tip itself is much better than the Benefit Push Up Liner (again, no offence to Benefit!) It’s longer, thinner, and a bit more flexible, meaning it’s much easier to get a precise and clean line along the lash line.
Note: As with many gel liners, they have not been ophthalmologist tested for waterline use, and thus aren’t officially recommended by Smashbox for waterline use. They do also need to be used with an oil-based makeup remover (that’s the downside of such a waterproof, long-wearing formula!)
I will do a full review of these when they launch in March/April!
2) L.A. Lights Blendable Lip & Cheek Color:
(This picture was taken from eBay – shoutout to whoever tried to sell it before it’s released!)
These cream blushes come in a stick formula (similar in concept to the Clinique Chubby Sticks For Cheeks.) These can be used on the lips or the cheeks, and have a soft, creamy texture making them ideal for blending. Inspired by the magic Light of L.A., they give a beautiful “lit-from-within” illuminated look. They also come with a flat sponge that is ideal for blending on-the-go.
These will be available in 5 shades, and launch in store in April.
3) Bronze Lights: This bronzer is described as “California in a compact”, and is a long-wearing, ultra-fine bronzer with similar technology to the Photofilter Powder Foundation. Smashbox claims that it “keeps color true and allows your skin’s undertones to come through.” It provides a gorgeous bronze look that doesn’t look orange or muddy, as well as matte shades to contour with.
Note: I believe these are a reformulated version of the original Bronze Lights.
4) Crush On Blush Palette:
(This picture was also taken from eBay)
As far as I know, this is supposed to be a Shoppers Drug Mart Exclusive (In Canada, anyway. I’m not sure about the US!) This is probably what I’m most eager for! It’s a gorgeous cheek palette featuring 4 blushes, 1 highlighter, and 1 bronzer. The textures are silky, smooth, light, and blendable. This palette is perfect for travelling, or for someone just starting to build their blush collection!
I am so excited for this Palette to be released! It launches in March, and would be so perfect to take with me to Iceland – if only it launched sooner!
I am so impressed with all of these products, and so excited for them to launch! Well done, Smashbox – you never fail to amaze me!
